Unoblique Pattern

Born from a 3-day session in October 2023 and subjected to a careful selection and subsequent composition process, the entire work is a sort of inner relationship/confidante with death, the end, surrender, and its reverse both etymologically and in meaning: life, the beginning, preservation. In this sense, the project takes "oblique," unconventional paths in order to reflect itself in an inner realm that fades and loses itself in the absolute, which on one hand is a fade-out into black and on the other a fade-in into white.

The project consists of two CDs: a black disc, graphically represented by a line (-), which through free interpretation can look like a closed eye, a vein, a path, or even a minus sign in mathematical notation—a subtraction, much like death or surrender; a white disc, graphically represented by a circle (O), a zero, which by contrast can look like an open eye, a hole through which light filters, a vein where blood flows as a vehicle for movement and life, a sense of circular continuity, addition, summation, and the infinite versus the finiteness of the minus/subtraction/end. Serving as the incipit for each disc, two Haiku songs introduce the two sides of the project. These songs bear the subtitles "myein I" and "myein II"; the Greek verb myein means "to close, to be silent," but also "to initiate," or further "represents the act of closing one's mouth and eyes" to yield to inner listening, silence, and contemplation toward the unspeakable, toward the mystery, whether dark or light.
